The skyscraper technique works for one structural reason: every link to the inferior original is a publisher who already decided this topic deserves a link. Regular content marketing publishes a piece and hopes links accrue organically. Skyscraper specifically targets the existing link inventory of an inferior page and converts those publishers via outreach. The link earning is engineered, not aspirational.

More comprehensive coverage, original data the original lacks, expert input the original missed, better structure and visualization, updated information if the original is dated, or all of the above. We don't run skyscraper if we can't credibly claim the upgrade.

Because the publisher already decided the topic deserves a link - they've linked to the original. You're not asking them to start linking; you're asking them to point at a better resource. That's a much smaller ask than cold outreach.
